UK Expands Methanol Toxicity Advisory List with 11 Nations

Methanol warning sign

British government has included eleven further nations to its travel alert roster about the risks of methanol toxicity from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

The updated advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol contamination.

Only recently, authorities had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, in response to several notable cases such as the deadly death of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that even small amounts of methanol can result in vision loss or fatality within 12 to 48 hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic substance commonly employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not designed for drinking.

While it is generated during the manufacture of spirits, licensed producers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the distillation process.

Yet in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to save money, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.

Official Recommendations for Travelers

Authorities representative the minister said that all travellers should recognize the indicators of methanol poisoning.

"When you are consuming alcohol in foreign countries, opt for well-known venues and avoid unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," Falconer warned.

"If something seems unusual, like a headache that's far more intense than normal or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor immediately."

The full register of countries noted as posing a risk of methanol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
