The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
