EU Maritime Forces Rescue Sailors After Somali Pirate Attack on Vessel

The Maltese-flagged tanker was seized by armed attackers on Thursday

EU maritime units have successfully rescued 24 sailors from a Maltese-flagged petroleum vessel that was targeted by sea robbers off the coast of Somalia.

The vessel, which was transporting fuel from Indian ports to South African destinations, was taken over on the recent incident when armed pirates began shooting with machine guns and explosive projectiles before boarding the vessel.

All sailors locked themselves inside a fortified citadel while the attackers assumed command of the ship.

Successful Rescue Operation

A naval vessel, operating under the European Union's maritime security operation, reached the ship on Friday afternoon. Elite military units entered the vessel and discovered all two dozen sailors unharmed.

"All personnel is safe and no injuries have been reported. Throughout the ordeal, they stayed in the secure area in direct contact with the operation," officials stated, adding that a "show of force" had prompted the attackers to abandon the ship before the naval unit arrived.

Continuing Danger

Officials added that the threat risk in the region "continues to be serious" as the pirates are still in the area.

The rescue operation utilized a helicopter, unmanned aerial vehicle and surveillance aircraft. Shortly before, a different vessel in the same area was approached by a small speedboat but managed to evade it.

Return of Maritime Crime

This event marks the most recent in a series of attacks that have raised alarms about a resurgence of piracy in the region.

Such activity had decreased when global maritime security and security measures were introduced after peaking more than a ten years past.

Nevertheless, assaults by militant groups on vessels in the Red Sea, which have been conducted for the recent period, have led ships to be rerouted through East Africa's Indian Ocean - opening up new possibilities for Somali gangs.

Statistical Overview

  • Multiple piracy cases of piracy took place off the coast of the Somali region last year
  • Several vessel takeovers were documented among these incidents
  • A single case of maritime crime was noted in 2023

Industry professionals continue to monitor the developments as vessel operators navigate these increasingly dangerous shipping lanes.
